The Apple Menu contains an item called "About Brickles Deluxe". Please select this item to see a message from the author.
THE FILE MENU
New Game - One Paddle - This will start a new game using only one paddle at the bottom of the window.
New Game - Two Paddle - This will start a new game using two paddles, one at the top and one at the bottom of the window.
New Game - Four Paddle - This will start a new game using four paddles, one on each side of the window. (This is a very challenging way to play! You might want to also select a slower speed until you get used to the action.)
Display High Score - This brings up a window displaying the high scores corresponding to the current game selection (1, 2 or 4 paddle game). Also shown in this display is the name of the player, and the mode of play (speed, paddle size and ball size). Note: If the speed, paddle size or ball size is changed during a game, the high score list will show a question mark (?) in the proper column to indicate which setting was changed mid-game.
Register - This program is Shareware. It is not free. If after playing the game, you decide you would like to keep the game, you should send the author the requested shareware donation. (See the "About..." dialog under the Apple Menu for more information.) In return, you will be sent (by regular mail, or immediately by email if you send your return email address) a serial number that you can enter into this dialog. Once entered and accepted, you will be a registered user and all features of the game will be enabled. "Nag" screen reminders will also be eliminated.
THE EDIT MENU
This menu contains the standard Edit Menu items.
THE SPEED MENU
This menu allows you to set the speed that the ball moves. The range of settings should allow Brickles Deluxe to be played by all ages, from ridiculously slow for very young children, to ridiculously fast for crazed hotshots. (See High Score Info for more information).
THE PADDLE MENU
This menu allows you to set the size of the paddle(s). (See High Score Info for more information).
THE BALL MENU
This menu allows you to set the size of the ball. (See High Score Info for more information).
THE COLOR MENU
This menu includes an item called "Edit Color...". This item, when selected, will display a dialog that allows you to customize the colors and patterns used in Brickles Deluxe.
THE SOUND MENU
Sound Off/On - This item toggles the game sounds on and off.
Edit Sound... - This item, when chosen, brings up a dialog box allowing you to customize the sound that is generated each time the ball hits a regular Brickle. You can adjust the note pitch and the note mode. Please experiment for best sounding results on your system.
Edit New High Phrases... - This item engages a dialog that is used to customize the phrases that the speech synthesizer says when a new high score is made. (only available to registered users)
Edit End Game Phrases... - This item engages a dialog that is used to customize the phrases that the speech synthesizer says when the game ends without a new high score. (only available to registered users)
Note: This program utilizes the built-in speech synthesis capabilities of your computer, if available. To change the voice used for the speech synthesis, use the Speech Control Panel. (The Control Panels, including Speech, can usually be found in the Apple Menu.)
